Do you want to know where your Mohair coat came from? Keeping reading and you will discover the secret of Cashmere/Mohair coats.
Probably most of the folks wearing some of the most costly and finest clothing do not have a clue they are wearing goat hair. It is true. Some of the finest coats and sweaters are made from goat hair. If it is called Mohair and Cashmere it is goat hair.
Sooner or later, it is unknown exactly when it was discovered goat hair is really good for making warm and comfortable coats and now sweaters.
These kind of hair are gorgeous and durable. In fact so durable they are made into carpets and floor rugs.
The goats used for the production of this hair are known as Cashmere and Angora goats. You have already guessed cashmere comes from Cashmere goats, leaving Mohair to come from the Angora.
Cashmere is not only soft and light weight, it is very warm also.
Harvesting the hair can be done a couple of times a year. An Angora can produce about two pounds of hair a year. However, their value is diminished as the goats get older. This is because the quality of the hair diminishes over time.
One of the nice things about Cashmere and Mohair clothing, it does not require the killing of anything to obtain a first piece of wardrobe. Unlike other kinds of coats, the critter who donates his fur also donates his life. Not a very fair trade. At least for them.
These goats are just worthless pets. They also produce a decent income for the owner twice a year.
There is more value to raising goats than just doing it for their milk or meat. Some breeds will create a very nice income from their hair.
